Stop Watching Your Weight and Start Watching your Life

Look Ma, here they come again! The weight loss industry hits us hard and heavy with more than forty million dollars worth of infomercials, printed media, radio, Internet and TV campaigns using actor doctors and high priced celebrities. They are anticipating the urgency of the one in three Americans wanting to shed the pounds gained during the previous months, and who are willing to be manipulated to collectively spend an estimated sixty billion dollars, to buy what does not work.  The dirty little secret that is not advertised is that 90 per cent of the people who support the diet industry gain back all their weight within the time it took to lose it.

We have the distinction of being a nation who spends more money on health care than any other nation in the world, and yet ranks around 36 in actual health and leads the planet in overweight and obese citizenry.  Here we have a situation where the tail is wagging the dog. We need to think about what we are doing and how we are being used.  We need to stop being distracted by the hype, and take our lives back.

In my book, From Fast foods the Slow Foods: How to Wake up Laughing, I define food as everything that affects your being; what you see, feel, hear, smell, taste, touch; your entire energy field.

Fast Food constitutes fast living, over consumption, overeating, over scheduling and multitasking. It is a world where the solution to every ill is to pop a pill. In the fast food world your attention is attracted from without. You act in response to the TV, the Internet, the latest fad, and you eat dead, devitalized over processed foods. In the fast food world you are a passenger.

Slow Food is living a more mindful lifestyle, one that is in tune with nature. It is eating clean unprocessed, natural food that does not harm nature or the environment. This is when you are in control of the movement of your attention. In the Slow food world you give your full attention to enjoying the present moment, rather than running to what you imagine to be the end goal. You make conscious decisions as to how you will respond to external events. In the slow food world, you are a navigator.

There is an enormous difference between attention directed outwardly and attention directed inwardly.

When you are able to control the movements of your attention in the slow food world, you can modify or alter your life as you please. Your attention is directed from within and you deliberately choose what you will be preoccupied with mentally.

This control cannot be achieved if you allow your attention to be attracted constantly from without in the fast food world.

The capacity to change your future depends on you ability to direct your attention inward.  This is how you light up with Life inside you!  When you are lit up and passionate about who you are, what you do and how you live – then making great choices about what to eat and how to move happens effortlessly. This is what I call slow food. This is when you become a navigator of your life.

FIVE THINGS TO DO TO BECOME THE NAVIGATOR OF YOUR LIFE

1.  Imagination – Thoughts, feelings, emotions, desire. Decide how you want to be and feel, and then live from it, become it, without judgment or reservation. How does it feel to be healthy, to be full of energy, to be young in spirit?  Feel that way.  Give no thought to other possible signals of who you are such as, “I am sick, I am fat, I am old, I am stressed”, if these are not your desired feelings. We become what we feel. Tune your body the way you tune a musical instrument. Imagination is the instrument by which you create your world.  Logic will get you from point A to point B. Imagination will get you everywhere.

2.  Consciousness – Consciousness is the one and only reality.  A change of consciousness is necessary to change your world. Consciousness does not come from outside of us.  It is the subjective center of things. You can change the story you tell about yourself.  Your mind is always arranged in the image of all you believe and consent to as true. The thief, the rich man, the beggar are not of different minds, but different arrangements of the same mind. Health, wealth, beauty and genius are not created; they are only manifested by the arrangement of your mind – that is, by your concept of yourself. Each of us has a choice as to the state of consciousness we want to experience at any given moment. Every wisdom tradition tells us this in some way: “As within, so without.

3. Assumption – If you want to accomplish something you must expect it of yourself. Once you adopt the feeling and arrange you mind in the image of your belief you must make your future dream a present fact. You do that by assuming the feeling of your wish fulfilled. Assume you are the person you want to be. If the assumption is persisted in until it becomes your dominant feeling, the attainment of your ideal is inevitable. You alone must accept the task of giving birth to a new and greater value of yourself. You know a thing mentally by looking at it from the outside, comparing it to other things, analyzing it and defining it; you know a thing spiritually only by becoming it. You must BE the thing yourself and not merely talk about it, or look at it.  It is up to you to assume the responsibility of your incarnation of a new and higher concept of your self.

4. Persistence – Feel yourself in a state of answered prayer and persist in that state. It can be anything from a feeling of inner peace to growing your business to being one hundred pounds lighter.  Only persistency in the assumption of the wish fulfilled can cause those subtle changes in your mind, which result in the desired change in your life. You must continuously rise in consciousness. Your assumption to be effective cannot be a single isolated act; it must be a maintained attitude of the wish fulfilled.

5. Faith – Faith is the awareness of the reality of that which you assume. (A lack of faith means you don’t believe in the existence of that which you desire, and will result in perpetual failure). Faith is from first to last an activity of your own consciousness. Assume the noblest and best for yourself in every respect.  Great wonders are possible.

The whole of creation, everything in the universe, exists in every one of us. As spiritual beings having a human experience, it is our destiny to become increasingly aware of the infinite wonders of the universe and to experience ever greater and grander portions of it.  Live from a place of love, spiritual awareness and divine mind. When your imagination connects with your consciousness and you increase your awareness, assume the reality of your wish fulfilled, and are persistent in faith – then when you say to the mountain in your life, MOVE! The mountain will be moved.

Remember my friends, “life is a limited time offer” so spend more time doing the things you love to do with your family, friends and loved ones. Make a plan of how to live your life, paying attention to what is really important to you. Celebrate joy, laughter, love and bliss this holiday. Celebrate life!

P.S.  A 200-pound woman told to me that she always wanted to be a famous ballerina and travel the world. “I can image that”, she said “I can see my self on stage.” I asked her if she could really feel this experience in her body.
